COMMUNITY OUTREACH |
Maderas Rainforest Conservancy
Tha Maderas Rainforest Conservancy (MRC) has been working diligently for the past 25 years with local communities and other outreach groups in order to protect the ecosystems of La Suerte Biological Field Station in Costa Rica and Ometepe Biological Field Station in Nicaragua. MRC is currently making efforts to host undergraduate and graduate students at field schools in the hope of educating others about conservation methods. As a result of deforestation, MRC has responded with replanting the forests and protecting the animals that live in it. MRC strives to educate others so that the knowledge can be used to make the best choices for the preservation of the forest. MRC would benefit from this page because it could help guide their choices about which conservation efforts could help endangered species.
Flora and Fauna International
The Flora and Fauna International (FFI) along with local partners have developed a strategic plan for the volcanic reserve while incorporating sustainable ecotourism methods. FFI also worked with the Nicaraguan Government to establish the island as an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This enables FFI and other conservation groups to achieve greater success for conservation through the development of more sustainable local agriculture and tourism. FFI was also the first group to establish a protected headquarters on the island equipped with park rangers. FFI could use information such as the maps, to give them a good idea of the types of terrain the island has.
Fundación Entre Volcanes
The Fundación Entre Volcanes (FEV) is a civil organization that strives to promote self-sustainable practices that will help to protect the Ometepe Biosphere Reserve. FEV encourages Ometepinos to live in harmony with their family, community, and their environment. By undertaking sustainable development, such as resource rationing and healthy food consumption, FEV hopes to improve the quality of life for the Ometepe inhabitants. FEV could use this website as a tool to gain support for self-sustainable changes.
American Cotswold Record Association
American Cotswold Record Association (ACRA) actively promotes community competence and sustainable development. With locations around the world, ACRA in Nicaragua works on rural development to establish management of water and sanitation through the formation of project committees. With this website, ACRA could make informative decisions about water so that they positively influence the animal species of Ometepe.
ECOTOURISM
Hostal Espirales
Hostal Espirales was established through Fundación Entre Volcanes (FEV) and it provides lodging and a restaurant service. The hostal uses solar energy systems and other mechanisms to provide tourists with sustainable accommodation, as well as create revenue to fund other local projects. Through social development products introduced through Hostal Espirales, the community can become more involved in self-sufficiency and sustainability. Hostal Espirales could use information found on this site to inform tourists of endangered species around the island to increase conservation awareness.
Sun Kite School
Sun Kite School offers an opportunity to learn how to kite surf in the beautiful waters surrounding the island. This location offers ideal steady wind, wind direction, shallow water, and pleasant water temperatures. Sonia and Emmanuelle, the two women who founded this school would benefit from this product because they would be able to inform tourists who participate in their school about conservation efforts around the island.
Finca Esperanza Verde Ecolodge
Finca Esperanza Verde Ecolodge is dedicated to offering Nicaraguan visitors a sustainable option for lodging in Matagalpa. This business hopes to work along side the community to establish and preserve the environment. The Finca Esperanza Verde Ecolodge offers three different types of cabin including the Colibri Cabin, Tucan Cabin, and the Motmot Cabin. Their website offers a tab for travelers to learn more about responsible tourism and sustainability practices. The Ecolodge would greatly benefit from the product of this site because they could use the information to inform visitors of the species around the island, as well as, offer guests outreach groups that they could get involved with. Check out their great reviews on trip advisor!
SCHOOLS
Hacienda Merida
The Hacienda Merida hosts Ometepe Bilingual School which is a bilingual elementary program to help foster education for children. This school is free of charge and hopes to encourage children to learn more about their culture and surroundings in order to set up a foundation for a sustainable environment.
