Amazona auropalliata, commonly known as the White-fronted Parrot is a species found throughout Central America, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. According to the IUCN, the White-fronted Parrot is vulnerable due to the decreasing population. Although much of their habitat is diminishing because of deforestation for agricultural purposes, illegal poaching is also a large part of the species decline. The illegal exportation of the White-fronted Parrot has decreased throughout the years, but it is estimated that over 50% of nests are affect by poaching (M. Lezama in litt. 2011). These parrots are in high demand due to their vibrant colors and ability to imitate many forms of sounds.
Procnias tricarunculata, also known as Three-wattled bellbird resides in Central and South America. They are currently registered as vulnerable by the IUCN due to the ever-increasing habitat lost, especially with the ongoing construction of the Nicaraguan Canal that is set to run along Ometepe Island. The Three-wattle bellbird is recognized by the distinct singing and vocalization. Although not much information about the behavior and emmigrational patterns of these birds exist, many believe that their loud calls are one of the loudest amongst birds.
Bolitoglossa insularis is an endemic salamander of Nicaragua. The salamander is known to reside on Ometepe Island and because of this it is listed as vulnerable under IUCN classifications. The habitat of the Bolitoglossa insularis is in danger due to the vast amount of deforestation for agriculture. As of 2008, this species of salamander is the only Bolitogloss species found at the mid-premontane level in Nicaragua (Sunyer et al. 2008).
Micrurus cf nigrocinctus, also known as the Central American Coral Snake, is most commonly found in lowland rain forest or lower montane forests. Unfortunately, the Central American Coral Snake is listed as Critically Endangered by IUCN due to the expanding tourism and deforestation of their habitat. Central American Coral Snake’s are usually nocturnal, terrestrial animals that are part of the venomous elapid snake species.
