Physical Geography
Ometepe (meaning ‘between two hills’ in Nahuatl) is the largest island to be surrounded by a freshwater lake. The island is made of two volcanoes Concepción and Maderas that is connected by a low isthmus. It has an area of 276 km², and it is 31 km long and 5 to 10 km wide. The two major towns, Altagracia and Moyogalpa are linked to the mainland by ferries. Other charms of the island of Ometepe include Charco Verde, Playa Santo Domingo, Balgüe, and Mérida.
Volcán Concepción, an active stratovolcano, is on the northwest half of the island, approximately 5,280 ft in elevation and 5,180 ft in prominence. It is located on the northwest half of Ometepe.

Volcán Maderas, an inactive volcano, is approximately 4,573 ft in elevation. It is located on the southeast half of Ometepe, and it has a crater lake that supports a diverse rainforest environment.
